Portland!

OK, Blogger is working again, so here we go!

I forgot to take pictures of about half of our food so this is more representative of breakfasts in Portland, but you'll get the point!

We got to Portland on Thursday after a really early flight. First thing on the agenda: find breakfast! Armed with our trusty map we navigated ourselves to The Paradox Cafe. I immediately set my sights on some French toast and Jim had a breakfast burrito. Paradox is a mostly veg*n restaurant with incredibly yummy looking diner food. They also have a huge assortment of desserts- all vegan!

We proceeded to drive to Food Fight to stock up on some essentials: peanut butter cups, jerky and nougat! Hells yes, it was delicious! I can't wait until we live there and I can take advantage of all the incredible treats they have to offer, like vegan whipped cream in a can!

Later that evening we met up with Mr.Herbivore himself (Mrs. and Baby were out of town) and we went to dinner at Veganopolis . I forgot the camera, but we all ended up knoshing on some sandwiches. I had a seitan Caesar. Mmm.... Sadly, I was too full for dessert. They had frosted cupcakes that looked like they'd make Isa proud!

The next morning Jim and I went to hunt down the ever-elusive vegan donuts at a place called Voodoo Doughnut . They had a, um, interesting display of donuts in their case, including one that looked like male genitalia and another that was a vampire, stabbed through the heart, complete with oozing raspberry filling. We got several donughts to try and headed out to explore downtown. (Jim looks a little stoned in this picture and doesn't think I'm posting it. Shhhh!)

Later that afternoon we went out for some vegan pizza by the slice at a place that I can't remember the name of. The pizza, however, was named Yummy. It had a roasted red pepper sauce, veggies and tempeh. Drool...

That night we went out with a friend to a concert at The Aladdin. We saw Natalia Zuckerman and Willy Porter. I wasn't too sure if I'd like Willy, as his songs sounded a bit subdued online, but MAN, can that guy put on a show! Half mad-scientist musician, half comedian, I was alternating between laughing and crying. Excellent show.

On our last full day (we had to leave fairly early on Sunday) we went to indulge in the breakfast buffet at Veganopolis. Included in the yummy fare was an incredible savory bread pudding, which is now my goal to recreate, tofu scramble, roasted potatoes, a spelt faux ham and cheese biscuit, some sausages, gravy and Jim and I split a delicate blueberry pancake. Yeah, we shared this and were still stuffed!

Our dinner the last night was enjoyed at The Kalga Cafe, which is a vegetarian restaurant next to Food Fight. I was tempted to order the pizza, which has vegan mozzarella, but I opted for my old standby, falafel. It had great ambiance and food, we will definitely be going back for many more meals.

So that was our trip to Portland! We basically spent 3 days driving around and eating. I never ate a single thing I didn't like. In fact, I'm having severe French toast pangs in my tummy right now! It was a wonderful time and now I'm just counting down the 6 weeks we have left in Phoenix until we are residents there!

I want to apologize for not always being as prompt as I'd like to on responses and posting. In the past Blogger was a site that I could dabble with at my work, but it's become a RESTRICTED page (we have this scary pop up that comes out of nowhere and scares the be-jezzes out of you), so I have to wait until I get home and I don't always have as much free time as I'd like. So, sorry!

Hi! Blogger was acting up on me too. So annoying. I adore your blog, and I'm adding you as a link (or, actually, as a blog I read) on my blog. I hope you don't think this is presumptous, but maybe you could add me as a link? If not, that's okay, I'll still read yours! LOL.

Was wondering what you were up to. Blogger is definitely acting up today. Hey krispycheks is there any way you could update the link to my blog (when you get time with all the moving preparations going on)? I changed the name and I'm about to take the old one down and don't want you to have dead links in your blog.

I am still obsessing over those vegan hot wings you had at Green.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

I've written to Green asking (pleading, and begging) that they consider opening a location in Mid-Michigan. Love the blog, btw. Got your link from a comment listed on Vegan Lunchbox.

You're going to love Portland! It was just named the best city for vegetarians.

http://www.goveg.com/f-vegcities-portland.asp

Veggie restaurants, Whole Foods, New Seasons Market, Daily Grind, Wild Oats. Fred Meyer's has a lot of health food store stuff, and even omni restaurants will have veg options.

Plus it's beautiful and roses everywhere!

Barbara

(can you tell I love my city?)

Primary consumer, I added your link. I like your blog! It made me hungry!

Kennyboy, sorry it took me so long to update that. I can look at blogs at work, which is where I do most of my surfing, but I can't actually sign in, so I've been meaning to get that link fixed.

Tanya, I hope something good 'n vegan opens up near you. Everyone deserves cruelty-free yumminess within a 10 mile radius of their home!

Barbara, Portland is the best! Veggie power!

Did I make a mistake moving to RI. Even the main Whole Foods store in Providence has its deli area overwhelmed with meat.

I'm so glad to hear you liked Willy! My bf and I have been seeing him perform for years. In fact, we're going to see him next Friday night in Cincinnati -- I can't wait!

I've been enjoying your blog for a few weeks now and am excited to hear about your move to Portland.

You are so lucky to be moving to Portland! I can travel about an hour to NYC where we have many great options including the Candle Cafe- wich is awesome! But to be able to shop at Food Fight is going to be wonderful. I try to order every so often to save on shipping costs...

Portland is great, but access to NYC, wow! There are over 20 all vegan restaurants alone! There's a great website www.supervegan.com that has great veg news on it as well as a comprehensive guide to all things yummy in NYC. Just surfing it makes me drool.

Katiemax, I hope you enjoy Willy! I hope I get to see him again, he was in Phoenix the weekend before we went to Portland, had I known I would have gotten tickets for that show, too!
