Feeling Sick, Squirrels and Whatcha Eatin' #3

Well, I must have jinxed myself by teaching Jim to cook for my own selfish reasons of not wanting to eat Ramen when I'm sick, because... I'm sick! Or I'm well on my way there. So what do I do when I'm sick? Indulge in comfort food...

Mashed potatoes and Punk Chickpea Gravy. OMG, can I truly express how much I love this gravy? I think not. Just as one cannot fully express their love for a child. It is seriously that good.

Squirrel update! This morning Linus, Bindhi and I sat by the back door watching this little guy try to trash the pumpkin.

He settled for hanging out on the squirrel feeder, munching on some pumpkin seeds. When I got home tonight, the top of the pumpkin was pulled out and it was tipped over, with lots of claw marks and bite marks all over it. How cute! The cats are thoroughly enjoying the entertainment.

Whatcha Eatin' #3: Sliced Bread

So, I was researching the phrase "the best thing since sliced bread", which literally refers to the first sliced bread (Wonder bread, ick) and came across an interesting factoid: The Secretary of Agriculture banned the sale of sliced bread during WWII. There were several reasons given for this ban, all of which seem a little strange. One being that the metal from the bread slicers was needed to make guns and other war supplies. While we all have heard stories of war time rationing related to metal, the little metal that was used for bread slicers seems like a strange thing to sacrifice, and many people were skeptical of this reasoning. Another reason that was given was that the demand for sliced bread would cause the cost of bread to increase, which would be bad during times of such financial hardship. The whole thing just sounds a little strange...

But WWII rationing may have seen the beginnings of something near and dear to many of our hearts: the Trumanburger, a veggie burger made from mashed beans. Maybe meat rationing wouldn't be such a bad idea in today's world...

And, I couldn't resist this picture of Bindhi, sneaking a lick of frosting from Jim's pumpin bar. She was so cute, I couldn't help but let her have a little tasty-taste.

I love it when Bailey sits at the table with us. Bindhi is so cute. I'd definitely give her a little tasty-taste too. Great idea to give the squirrels a pumpkin. My brother bought a pumpkin and when he's done with it after halloween, I'll definitely put it on our deck for the squirrels. Hopefully they'll see it because it's up a flight of stairs. Maybe I'll have to leave a trail of pumpkin seeds!

Put it on the stairs to your deck. But I'll bet the squirrels are all over your deck anyway.

Everyone is raving about this gravy. I'm going to have to try it. OMG!! I love that squirrel photo. That is so awesomely cute! So is the cat licking the cake. Bread slicers sacrificed in war time? Sounds a little weird to me too.

Bindhi is a sneaky little sweetie, she has quite the sweet tooth, so we have to watch her.

Anon, I guess it just in VwaV, I wasn't sure if it was on their site. The book is worth that recipe alone!

Madeinalaska, It was so funny, Jim came over and kind of yelled "hey, that's mine!" and rather than jumping down, she gave him the most pissed off look and turned back to the icing! She doesn't take any crap from us!

Crystal, so glad to see you back! I'm sure they'll find it, squirrels have good noses.

Laura and Carrie, you must try the gravy recipe soon! It's so amazing!

I have the book, but have not yet tried this chickpea gravy yet either! i know I'd love it too much. Maybe that's why I'm not making it! Lol!

How adorable to see that squirrel tackle your pumpkin! I will definitely leave ours out for our squirrels and racoons!

Bindhi! LOL! I laughed out loud at that picture! I love it. How sneaky!

I have yet to try that gravy, and I honestly have no good excuse, other than forgetting about it. Yours looks so holiday food-licious, or something like that~

Aw...can you blame Bindi and the Squirrel? They want good vegan eats, too.

I've been meaning to try that Punk CP Gravy.

My cats do that - look at me with complete and utter disdain whenever I scold them. I not only have to get up from where I am, but take sufficient steps towards them to make it clear that I'm not kidding.

And, I must add, I can never get enough of the ever-lovin' squirrels.

Candi, the nice thing about the chickpea gravy is that because there is protein in it, you can convince yourself that it's okay to keep eating more and more... or at least that's what I do, lol.

Jess, you'll love the gravy. I use a lot of onion, which I know you won't be into, but it's got so much going on in it that the onion won't make much of a difference.

Urban, Bindhi is one of those cats, she will eat anything! She's a little kitty disposal like that.

Erica, we have to do the same thing with our cats, minus Ravi who is skittish and it easily freaked out. Bindhi will jump on the counter and I'll start by saying "Bindhi..." in a low voice. Then she just blinks at me blankly. Then I say "Bindhi, get down!" and she'll hunker down where she is and glare at me. Then I have to get up and more towards her like I'm going to take her off of the counter and she'll do one of 2 things: Jump down and run away like a bat out of hell, or she'll start purring and arching her back, as if to say "Aren't I cute, Mommy? I can walk on the counters, can't I?"

aw thanks for giving it the onion-less thumbs up.
